Betsy’s dying wish was a simple one. She wanted to visit the casino resort that was about a two-hour drive north of her home. This wouldn’t be my dying wish, but for Betsy, it was her highest priority. Daily she would ask to go, and daily her son Dan reminded her, “When you get strong enough we will go.”
It was pretty clear to us all that she couldn’t muster the strength to go into her own backyard let alone get in the car and drive for hours. Betsy’s ninety-one year old body was full of cancer and one of her lungs had recently collapsed.
Last Sunday something shifted. She found her strength. She put on a string of pearls and got in the car. Dan drove her straight to the casino resort, put her in a wheel chair, and head for the slots.
Within the first hour, Elizabeth won a $1,000 jackpot. In the next hour, Dan struck it rich with a $10,000 win! To top off the day, Betsy effortlessly reeled in another cool grand. They had a huge celebratory dinner and cocktails that night.
Betsy fell asleep in the car on the way home, and hasn’t really woken up. She is expected to pass away within the next day or two.
Sometimes, when we least expect it, the odds are in our favor.
